A Sanskrit poem, composed by a Jain monk in the 13th century, is here translated into English for the first time. The roots of Jainism stretch back to the Bronze Age, at least 3,200 years ago. An ascetic movement, its meditation and yoga practice predates not only the Buddha, but perhaps Hinduism as well. Some Jains trace their origins as far back as the Indus Valley Civilization, making these traditions contemporaneous with the ancient Egyptians and Sumerians. Jainism could therefore represent the original faith of India, and possibly the mother of all Eastern religions. Through a series of intricate wordplays, embedded in rich vocabulary and ever-changing meters, the poet-monk takes this opportunity to sing to his medieval audience of the dangers inherent in the illusions of the physical world. In order to escape the fate of being born into a body in recurring cycles, we are here exhorted to the |path of liberation|: shedding all desire and, with it, the imperfections of this confused existence. The poet here refers to the sensory world as a |forest of poisonous trees|. The paradox of achieving spiritual freedom through |eye-opening knowledge| of the underlying structure of Reality is immeasurably old. How much this ideology, expressed in these 46 stanzas, has been influenced by Buddhism is impossible to tell. To the extent elements of the true Jain lineage shine forth, however, this poem opens the door to an esoteric philosophy that could date back 5,000 years.
